At the strong recommendation of some good friends, we visited Amore’s Pizza & Pasta off of Northwest Highway on Saturday night. And we noticed something a bit odd. Given the huge variety of Italian specialties on their menu, most of the patrons were eating pizza.
Here’s the problem: Last weeek we claimed that Italian Xpress in Grapevine serves up the best pizza in town. You would think that we would order the pizza to compare.
Okay, so we did not order the pizza. Maybe it was a little out of fear. Or maybe it was because Amore’s Pizza & Pasta carries what might possibly be our favorite dish of all time: Shrimp Tortellini. How could we pass that up? And it did not disappoint. Now we are stuck because they are supposed to have great pizza as well and we did not get to sample any.
Amore’s is the type of place we love. They are family owned and operated. They do not just serve food. They live for their food.
Here are a few other things you need to know before visiting:
- The atmosphere is great. Nice, quiet, and somewhat dimly lit. Just like you’d expect.
- The service is exceptional.
- The meals are very affordable. In fact, we thought we had the lunch menu at first. We didn’t. It is just very reasonably priced especially for the quality of food you get.
- It is BYOB. Pick up a bottle of wine on your way in or bring one from home. This helps make it even more affordable.
- The Veal Parmesan is also a highly recommended meal.
We can not wait to go back. We have to get back there to try the pizza. There is a chance that it could rival Italian Xpress. We’ll find out soon!

Yes. Italian Xpress serves up the best pizza in Grapevine. There, we said it.
Is this an overstatement? No.
Is this an opinion? Yes. But it is still TRUE!
This is not meant to discount any of the other pizza places in Grapevine. There are plenty of good ones. There are even some great ones. Unfortunately, only one can win the title of THE BEST. We have been searching for this place for years. And we finally found it.
Italian Xpress sells more than pizza. We have tried their Ziti, Stromboli, and Cale-zones and all have been good. But the pizza is what sets this place apart. It is remarkable. It makes us forget other pizza places. It is the kind of pizza where you do not really want to tell your friends out of fear that one day you might walk in and the place will be so busy that you can not get your pizza.
Maybe part of the reason it is so good is because it is new. Maybe one day we will grow tired of it. But not today. And possibly not ever.
Just writing this is making my mouth water. Now, we will have to pick some up on our way home.
If you want to try the pizza for yourself, Italian Xpress is located at:

If there is better pizza place in Grapevine, we have yet to find it. Feel free to tell us your favorite pizza in the comments below. Let us know what we are missing.
We can say we are definitely in love with their motto –
- Hot Chili
- Cold Beer
- Live Music
Those three things are simple and easy to love.
Tolbert's Bar Area
We visited Tolbert’s yesterday for lunch. The atmosphere is fantastic. Tolbert’s is located in the center of downtown Grapevine along Main Street. You walk in and are greeted by friendly staff. The first thing you notice is the huge bar along the left side of the restaurant. And in the back there is a nice sized stage for the live music that is played nightly.
The chili is some of the best we’ve ever had. It is worth a stop in just for that, and well, maybe an ice cold beer to go with it. Tolbert’s was opened by one of the original founders of the famous Terlingua Chili CookOff held in November every year in the Big Bend area of Texas.
The Tolbert’s website calls their food Southwestern Cuisine. We’d agree with that since you can get anything from burgers to enchiladas to the Grapevine Ribeye (which we will definitely go back and try).
On this visit we sampled the combination beef and chicken nachos which were excellent and the Guacamole Burger which was also very good.
The people are friendly. The pace is nice and relaxed. This really is a must stop restaurant for visitors to Grapevine and residents who happen into the downtown area as well.
We absolutely loved it and can not wait to get back and take in some of the live music.
Last night, we went to bed with these thoughts running through our head –
- Hot Chili
- Cold Beer
- Live Music
It really doesn’t get any better.

Located in the heart of downtown Grapevine Texas is Dino’s Steak and Claw House. We visited them last night to check out their Valentine’s Weekend dining experience.
Let me just start by saying, we love the location of Dino’s and have wanted to try in now for several months. It is right on the corner of Main Street and Worth in historic downtown. The interior of the restaurant is very well laid out with a wide foyer as you enter. You can see the bar straight ahead and the seating areas on both sides and upstairs.
We loved the atmosphere. It had great lighting, music, and just a romantic feeling like we had our own little piece of the restaurant. The overall feel was great.
Now for the Valentine’s Weekend, there was a set 5-course meal offered with choice of filet mignon, salmon, or stuffed chicken for the main course. Typically, I like choices when it comes to dining, but the menu was well thought out. Maybe the best part of the meal was the first course which was a light, but delicious avocado and crab lettuce appetizer that really set the feeling for the entire dinner.
The second course was a bowl of clam chowder which was very enjoyable. This was followed by a small salad that included a spicy mix of apples, lettuce and feta cheese. For the main course, we selected the filet mignon and were not disappointed. It was cooked exceptionally.
For desert, we got a light taste of chocolate that was shapped like a heart and topped with a small scoop of ice cream.
Overall, the $75 set menu was worth the price. It was well paced as we did not even notice the two hours go by.
The only mild disappointment was at the very beginning of the evening. We love to be greeted when entering a restaurant. When you are not greeted, it leaves you wondering what you should do. We were standing there for what felt like several minutes along with several other guests before the hostess got off the phone to say hello. We really hope this was just a one time occurrence and is not the norm for this restaurant.
Everything else was very tastefully done. We were delighted with the Valentine’s experience and will be back to try other parts of the menu.

We have long heard rumors of how great the breakfasts were at Old West Cafe in Denton. Unfortunately, we were never able to make the drive up I-35 to try it out. Great news is that as of January 2010, Old West Cafe has opened a Grapevine location just outside of historic downtown located at 600 W. Northwest Hwy.
Right away we were impressed with the massive amount of options on the breakfast menu. It took nearly 10 minutes to decide what to order. We love having choices and at Old West Cafe you have many options in all of their menu categories. Whether you are looking for a healthy breakfast, or french toast, or tex mex favorites, or skillet breakfasts (or many others) you will get to choose between 7 to 10 meals IN EACH SECTION.
We ordered two breakfasts, one was called the Cheyenne and the other was the Bronco Buster.
The Cheyenne is a cinnamon roll that has been dipped in French toast batter and is baked fresh daily. It comes lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. This was the best cinnamon roll we have ever had and quite frankly it is not really close. It tasted so good we wondered if it might be illegal in certain parts of the country.
The Cheyenne also comes with two eggs, two pieces of bacon or sausage, and your choice of one other side item. We ordered the bananas and strawberries as our side item and they were very fresh and tasty.
The Bronco Buster comes with one huge pancake, two eggs, two pieces of bacon or sausage or ham, and one other side item. We ordered the blueberry pancake which was very good. We ordered the eggs scrambled and they might have been the best restaurant scrambled eggs we have ever tasted. The sausage patties were also very good. Everything tasted homemade.
Our side item with the Bronco Buster was the fried potatoes. These are like mini-triangle French fries and they too were perfectly done. They were hot, fresh, and crisp.
The service at Old West Cafe was good. Everyone there was very friendly and they all seemed to work together to help us enjoy the meal.
As we watched food come out of the kitchen there were so many plates that we want to go back and try. We saw omelets, breakfast tacos, and skillet style breakfasts all go by and they all looked so delicious.
We also want to go back later in the day to test out the lunch menu.
This is our new favorite breakfast spot in Grapevine and we cannot wait to go back.
Old West Cafe is open from 6 am to 2 pm every day and breakfast is served all day.

Cantina Laredo in Grapevine is a great stop for high quality Mexican food. We stopped by there last night for dinner and enjoyed some of the best fajitas and margaritas around.
Here’s what we loved about Cantina Laredo:
– Friendly staff who met our every need
– Top notch Mexican food; everything seemed fresh and handmade
– Some of the best margaritas in the area
– Free queso
Here’s what we did not love:
– Might be a tad pricey for Mexican food
We really enjoyed our visit to Cantina Laredo. When we sat down we were quickly greeted and immediately brought chips, salsa, AND QUESO. This is a nice touch mostly because we love chips and queso and we can not think of another restaurant that does this. This location of Cantina Laredo brings free queso to every table (according to our very informative server).
We ordered chicken fajitas and sour cream and chicken enchiladas for dinner. Both were outstanding. The items that really set these meals apart were the freshness of the tortillas and the great taste of the re-fried beans. We never really planned on commenting on re-fried beans in any review, but these might have been the best we have ever had.
The cost is really the only drawback and it is not really that much of one. Prices are fairly competitive, but if I do a quick comparison between Cantina Laredo and Esparza’s or Jucle Julio’s I find that the meals are a dollar or two more at Cantina Laredo. It is not a huge deal, but we just want you to know what to expect.
All in all, everything was wonderful. We will have to re-evaluate our Top 5 Mexican restaurants in the Grapevine area in 2010. Cantina Laredo certainly deserves consideration.
