JR’s Grill in Colleyville Review

JR’s Grill in Colleyville has been open a little over a month now so we figured it was time to give them a try.  Given that we are huge fans of JR’s Steakhouse (located about a quarter of a mile away) we could not wait to get in there.

The amazing thing is JR’s Grill manages to capture some of the same feel from the Steakhouse.  The lighting is somewhat dim.  There are tons of booths to sit in and enjoy dinner.  And like the steakhouse there are two distinct areas of the restaurant.  There is a main dining area and also a separate bar area which is filled with flat screen televisions and two pool tables in the back.  We love the pool table idea by the way.  No one else does this (at least no one that we can think of).

Even though JR’s Grill is a bar and restaurant we found it to be very family friendly.  The overall menu is great.  It is exactly what you would expect with burgers, sandwiches, BBQ ribs, and tons more.  The burger list is long and diverse.  The list includes the Monster, Tijuana, Diablo, Prime Filet Buger, among others.

We love a good burger around here so we gave JR’s Cheeseburger a try.  We were not disappointed.  The burger we had will definitely be in the running for the best burger in the area when we update our best burgers in the Grapevine area article.  We also tried the Smoked Baby Back Ribs which were great as well.  These are not fall-off-the-bone ribs.  They are different, but are very good.  The ribs had a great smokey flavor that we loved.  And the kids meal which was just grilled chicken and veggies was also very well prepared.

Part of the appeal of JR’s Grill is that is a locally owned (non-chain) establishment with a lot of personal touches.  It is really hard to describe, but the feel of the restaurant is so unique.  JR’s just has a way of providing a high quality meal in a great atmosphere.

We are not really into ranking our favorite places, but if we did JR’s Grill would be on that list.  We can not wait to get back and spend some time exploring the rest of the menu.  I’m thinking the Prime Time Filet Burger is up next.

A Dinner At Kirby’s Steakhouse In Southlake (Restaurant Week)

If you are not familiar with restaurant week, you should be.  It is a great and affordable way to sample some of the top restaurants in Dallas / Fort Worth.  The gist is that for $35 (part of which goes to charity) you get a three course meal at a top local restaurant.  Last week, after reviewing several restaurant week menus we decided to give Kirby’s Steakhouse a try.  Kirby’s had a lot more options on their restaurant week menu than the other places we considered.

We arrived for dinner pretty late, after 9 pm. The restaurant was packed.  The bar area, the restaurant, and the lounge area where a live band was playing were all full of people laughing and enjoying themselves.  The live music and the sense that people were having a great time made for a wonderful vibe.

We were seated relatively quickly which was good since we it was late and we were hungry.  The sourdough bread that was brought out right away helped ease the hunger a little bit.  The bread was top notch.  We ordered each of the appetizer options from the restaurant week menu.  The Smoked Paprika Pork Yakatori and the Alaskan King Crab Cake were both very good.

For dinner, we ordered the Peppered Tenderloin Tips and the Filet Oscar with an extra side of mashed potatoes.  Both of these were excellent as well.  At this point, any ounce of hunger was gone as we were stuffed.  But given that the dinner was a three course meal, we felt obligated to plow through some desserts.

Really, we should have saved more room because the desserts were the highlight of the evening.  The chocolate cheese cake was very good, but the Kirby’s Chocolate Spice Cake was one of the top 5 desserts we have ever tasted (and we are not really chocolate cake people).  It is served hot, right out of the oven.  And it is huge. Did we mention we were no longer hungry?  That did not stop us as the Chocolate Spice Cake was too good to be resisted.

Everything at Kirby’s was wonderful.  It was a great dinner and experience.  The restaurant week is such a great idea because it gives the opportunity to try places like this that normally we would not try.  The only problem now is we have to figure out how to get more of the Chocolate Cake.  It was unreal.

The good news is that Kirby’s Steakhouse has extended their restaurant week menu through September 5th. So it is not too late to get in on this deal.

The Original Pancake House Review

It is always nice to go to a restaurant that does everything right.  And that was the case with The Original Pancake House during our visit.  Everything was perfect.

We make no secret that we are huge advocates of restaurants that have someone waiting near the door to greet you as you enter.  The Original Pancake House got off to the right start by having someone waiting at the door who opened the door for us, said hello and asked how we are doing. And then right away asked how many it would be and took us immediately to our table.  We know that this seems like such a simple thing, but so many places fail right off the bat at something so easy.  It was really nice to see it done well.

We ordered some coffee right away which was very good.  They also serve fresh squeezed orange juice which we could see being squeezed from our table.

Another nice touch was that our server let us know that they started some complimentary “baby pancakes” for our one-year old.  They arrived about the same time that we ordered our meals.  It was just another fine point that a lot of restaurants miss.

The menu offered a huge selection of breakfast items.  Not only do they have a large number of specialty pancakes (chocolate chip, banana, pecan, buckwheat, etc.) they offered crepes, omelets, waffles, and a number of healthy breakfast items.

We ordered the bacon and cheese omelet with a side of buttermilk pancakes as well as two biscuits with sausage and hash browns.  Everything was excellent.  The biscuits were huge.  I’ve seen some of those new Smart Cars that were smaller than these biscuits (okay, maybe not that big, but still).  The best part of the meal was the pancakes.  Pancake is in the name of the restaurant for a reason.  They are very good.

We enjoyed the visit very much and will be back to try some of the specialty pancakes that we missed out on.

If there was one thing we would change, it was that the tables are a little too close together.  Most people like to have some privacy while eating.  You do not want to be bumping into the guy next to you (that you do not know) with every bite.  But this was easily overlooked when everything else was so good.

Bottom line is The Original Pancake House has a huge menu, full of great breakfast items, and exceptional service.  We loved it.

JR’s Steakhouse In Colleyville Review

We have been fortunate this year to dine at some really great places.  And we are not only talking about in Grapevine and Colleyville, but throughout Dallas and Fort Worth.

We are not quite half way through the year and our visit to JR’s Steakhouse ranks as the best place that we’ve been this year.  Our expectations are always high when we go to a steakhouse.  We expect perfection or very close to it.  At JR’s Steakhouse everything from the sourdough bread at the start and all the way through the creme brulee at the end was perfect.

The Experience

Even outside of the food, we love it when a restaurant has a unique vibe.  JR’s definitely has this.  When you go there it does not feel like any other place you’ve been.  It is just a wonderful, unique experience.  It is a little hard to explain the feeling that you are not at some cookie cutter steakhouse, you are at JR’s.  It feels different and we love that.

There are two separate areas of the restaurant.  First is the main dining area that is wide open with plenty of tables and a few booths along the wall.  The main dining area is a little bit loud.  Everyone is talking and having a good time.  Then there is a separate dimly lit room with a huge bar, televisions, and a live piano player.

What We Ordered

We mentioned it earlier, but the sourdough bread that you start with is fantastic.  From there we ordered the JR’s Salad and the Chopped Salad.  Both were as fresh, light, and crisp as you would find anywhere.

The main courses were next and they were exceptional.  We ordered the Mushroom Filet for one meal and the Bacon Wrapped Petite Filets for the other.   Everything from how they were prepared, to the taste, to the sauces blew us away.  Both meals came with smashed potatoes.  As a side we ordered the Macaroni and Cheese as it came highly recommended.

We closed it out with the Creme Brulee.  It did not let us down either.

We Were Very Impressed

Everything was so impressive.  JR’s makes you feel like each part of the meal is specially made for you.

We really can not say enough about how enjoyable the entire experience was at JR’s Steakhouse.  If you get the chance, you should definitely stop in and enjoy.

Chill In Grapevine Texas Review

Chill in Grapevine is a very distinct restaurant / bar on the corner of Main Street and Dallas Road.  The exterior of the building is a grayish tin material like something you would see on an old barn in East Texas.  In a huge contrast, the inside is stylishly black with lots of mirrors.  The huge dining area inside surrounds a nice outdoor patio area that is perfect for a meal or drink whenever there is good weather.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful during our visit.  At the recommendation of our waitress, we tried the KB’s Spicy Chicken Wrap which lived up to its name.  It was VERY spicy and if you like that kind of thing you will enjoy this wrap.  We also ordered the The Club Salad which was also full of fresh goodness.

The menu is long with plenty of options to choose from.  We will definitely be back to try more of the food now that we know how good it is.

Chill is very aptly named.  We found the atmosphere to be very relaxed.  This is definitely a home town type of bar where people make an effort to get to know each other.

There are daily drink specials that you can find at the Chill website.  And there is often live music or a DJ playing in the evenings.

If you are looking for a cool place to hang out, eat, dance, or listen to music, Chill in Grapevine has it all.
