Tilted Kilt came to Grapevine not all that long ago, but is now closed. We will speculate that the DFW Connector construction had something to do with the closing. Of course it probably did not help that there is a Hooter’s and a Bone Daddy’s near by.

Even if people wanted to go to Tilted Kilt it was almost impossible to get there. The frontage road in front of the Tilted Kilt is closed and the restaurant sits on the corner of the worst intersection in Grapevine at William D. Tate and Highway 114.

We tried driving around Grapevine tonight and were quickly reminded why we do not go out after 8 pm. Getting across Highway 114 (which basically splits Grapevine) was nearly impossible. We had to go to Southlake to get across.

Tilted Kilt leaves us with fond memories of a interview we did back in 2010. Goodbye Tilted Kilt. You will be missed.

Lake Grapevine is full. Several boat ramps are currently closed due to high water.

Heavy rains over the past week filled local creeks, ponds, and eventually Lake Grapevine. Rain fell most of Wednesday evening and on into Thursday. Over 4.5 inches of rainfall were recorded over that two day period.

Parks were flooded on Thursday and closed to the public in southern Grapevine. Parr Park (seen above) and Big Bear park were the most impacted of the parks because they run along Big Bear Creek.

The lake level of Lake Grapevine had been several feet low for months, but now is about 2 feet above normal. Several boat ramps are currently closed due to high water including Katie’s Woods ramp, Sand Bass ramp, and Lake View ramps.

The rain was a big help to all area lakes.

Gridlock prevails.

It is very difficult to agree on a solution when you cannot agree on the problem. That was the case on Tuesday night at the City Council workshop in regard to the electioneering during early voting issue.

In a city council meeting a month ago, the issue was raised of people being “accosted” on their way to the polling place during early voting. Some of the people being accosted were not even there to vote, but rather to exercise. That is two problems, not one.

A simple solution that solves most of the problem(s) would be to have one entrance to the Community Activities Center (CAC) for voting and one entrance for everyone else using the CAC in its normal capacity. Then at least you have stopped people who are there to exercise from being approached.

Laws already exist keeping politicians and their friends from electioneering within 100 feet of the door of the polling place. If you used the south entrance to the CAC as the voting entrance then you might solve all of the problem(s) since there is parking right in front of the door.

But on Tuesday night gridlock prevailed as some council members wanted all three doors open and available for voting which would keep electioneering away from three sides of the building. Some council members wanted only one door used for voting. And some wanted things to just stay the way they are now.

As council member Shane Wilbanks put it, “It will be business as usual during voting periods.” And Mayor William D. Tate added, “The problem may solve itself.”

The main entrance to the CAC will continue to be used for both voting and as the entrance for exercising during the voting periods.

Southbound lane on Main Street near the new CVB building is gone (permanently). Oof.

The new Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Building came with a steep price. No, we are not talking about the nearly $14 million price tag. We are talking about the removal of one of the lanes heading south on Main Street in downtown Grapevine, Texas.

At the City Council workshop on Tuesday night, we learned that the lane on the part of Main Street near the new CVB building has been permanently removed. In place of the lane is an extended side walk and a place to parallel park two or three cars in front of the new CVB building.

So our question is:

Was the two or three additional parking spaces added worth losing a driving lane on Main Street in downtown?

Here is a quick news flash: There is a lot of traffic currently (and probably in the future) on Main Street.

Discussions also centered around removing a portion of the north bound lane in front of the J.E. Foust & Son funeral home and adding seven new parallel parking spaces there. Did we mention the traffic on Main Street?

From a pure traffic point of view, Main Street needs all the lanes it can get. We have no idea when or from where the plan came to remove the lane in front of the new CVB building, but it is a bad plan.

From an artistic (and photographic) perspective adding parking in front of buildings is also a mistake. Vehicles in front of buildings remove some of the picturesque quality.

We are having a difficult time grasping the rationale here.

Maybe we can put up a new sign near the city limits. “Welcome to the <del datetime="2012-01-18T03:26:26+00:00">Christmas</del> Congestion Capital of Texas.”

A look at the new restaurants coming to Grapevine, Texas this year.

Welcome 2012.

Sure we got a lot of new restaurants in Grapevine in 2011, but 2012 could be even bigger. Here are a few new restaurants that we anticipate dining at in the coming year in Grapevine.

Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

We have been talking about Pappadeaux coming to Grapevine for over two years. Our bet (and hope) is this is the year it finally gets complete and we can dine at the Pappadeaux Grapevine location. Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen will be located off of Highway 114 in the old Tia’s Tex Mex building (near Uncle Julio’s).

Eatzi’s

Eatzi’s is scheduled to open this summer on the corner of William D. Tate and Highway 114. We just sampled a few of Eatzi’s salads yesterday. The California Cobb Salad is remarkable. We have no idea how they do it. The food is so fresh and delicious. The salad dressings are also a treat. Note, Eatzi’s is more of a takery type place, but the food is so good and we love to take food home.

In-N-Out Burger

The corner of William D. Tate and Highway 114 is going to be very busy. Not only Eatzi’s, but In-N-Out Burger will be going in across the street. Construction on the new In-N-Out building is well on its way. Let’s hope construction finishes up the William D. Tate bridge sometime soon or else very few people will be getting in and out of all these new places.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

Not surprisingly, in the same area as In-N-Out Burger will be a Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. Pizza, beer, wine, sounds like the perfect place to us. The Grimaldi’s website says the Grapevine location is coming soon.

Jimmy John’s

It has been months since we heard aobut Jimmy John’s coming to town. We have no new update but expect them to be in Grapevine in 2012. This is very dangerous news for us (hint: we love Jimmy John’s and the Gourmet Sandwiches they make).
