January sales tax revenue in Grapevine, Texas was down 10% versus the prior year. Year to date (since October) sale tax revenue is down over 5% in Grapevine according to the Texas Comptroller website.
The obvious question is why is the revenue down so much?
The first and easiest guess as to why is the local construction of the DFW Connector. But Southlake is up 12% and Colleyville is up 21% and we would think the construction would impact those two cities as well.
The second guess is the Super Bowl which was held in Arlington, Texas last year drove up hotel occupancy in Grapevine which caused a very tough year over year comparison. The city of Fort Worth is down a little over 1% year over year and they likely had significant hotel revenue last year as well.
Maybe it is a combination of both factors.
Being down by 10% means Grapevine brought in about $400,000 less tax revenue in January 2012 than it did in January 2011.
