In what should be considered great news for the City of Grapevine, we will have at least one race for City Council this year. Kathleen Thompson has decided to run for City Council Place 6 versus five term (that’s 15 years people) incumbent Roy Stewart.
On Thompson’s website, she states her top priorities as follows:
- Target wasteful spending
- Fight secrecy in council dealings
- Respectfully represent all Grapevine residents
- Maintain and enhance Grapevine’s unique quality of life
The first two bullet points are fairly specific and should be easy to track should Thompson win the election on May 14th, 2011. The bottom two bullet points are pretty “touchy-feely” and what you might expect from any candidate running for city office.
Now here’s why the idea of an actual race makes us at Grapevine Texas Online so giddy. Our city is in desperate need of new ideas and new direction. The City Council in our view currently suffers from a major case of “group think.” Win or lose, the race alone should at least bring about a colorful discussion of topics and new ideas surrounding the city.
Should Kathleen Thompson go on to win City Council Place 6, we are excited about the possibility of more active communication with residents and the increased transparency she will bring to the position.
Thompson is vested in the future of our community having graduated from Grapevine High School and now helping raise her young family in Grapevine.

As we mentioned above the election will be held on May 14th, 2011. Please mark your calendars.
Update: It sounds like this will be a three person race. Deverick Jordan, a commercial real estate appraiser and tax consultant will also challenge for Place 6 of the Grapevine City Council. This should be an exciting race that takes place over the next two months.
